Architecture lovers shopping for a new home in Los Angeles now have a rare opportunity to own a distinctive property designed by the famed architect Richard Neutra.

Built by the master architect in 1941, the Hollywood Hills home is known as the Bonnet House (for its first occupants) and has a unique design: it’s shaped as a series of redwood-clad cubes angled into the hillside.

The unique design earned this early modernist home much-deserved recognition in Arts & Architecture magazine, best known for its sponsorship of the Case Study House program.

An architectural home embedded into the hillside

“Set on a steep site, the Bonnet House is embedded into the hillside as a series of redwood-clad cubes topped with an angled roof that parallels the incline — an unusual detail for a Richard Neutra-designed home,” says Compass agent Todd Bachenheimer, who holds the listing alongside Douglas Elliman’s Matt Schwartz.

“Neutra was a master of integrating his architectural homes into their unique surroundings. This early modernist design is no exception. It echoes the Hollywood Hillside it sits upon and is perfectly sited for stunning sunsets, canyon and city views while incorporating outdoor living into every room.”

With minimalist interiors and mid-century modern flair

The 1,551-square-foot home has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and minimalist interiors oozing mid-century modern flair, with walls of glass and ribbon windows reminiscent of Le Corbusier’s work (who believed they provide more light than traditional window designs).

The primary bedroom boasts an additional open hearth fireplace with rare curved details and walls of glass that echo Neutra’s Kaufman House of the same era — an architectural gem that we recently got to admire up close in 2022’s hit movie, Don’t Worry Darling.

Richard Neutra was a master of integrating his architectural structures into their unique surroundings. The Bonnet House is no exception.

Its design pays tribute to the Hollywood Hillside it sits upon and invites stunning sunsets, canyon, and city views — while incorporating outdoor-living into every room.

There’s also a separate studio on the grounds of the property

The property also includes a separate studio with kitchenette and period-correct full bathroom. The lush grounds are a wonderful mix of mature foliage, new landscaping, and multiple outdoor spaces, creating a retreat away from the bustling city.
