Cantilevered over a hilltop on one of the most desirable streets in the coastal city of Rye, New York, a revamped mid-century modern home is a feat of modern architecture — and now features beautiful minimalist interiors to match.

Set on 2.5 acres of serene land at 17 Pilgrim Road in Rye, New York, the California-style mid-century modern was recently listed for $4,950,000 with Stacey Rechler and Yi (Judy) Zhou of Douglas Elliman.

That means that the beautiful 1969-built home will soon be welcoming new residents — after being cherished by only two owners in 56 years.

A truly modern mid-century home

The Rye, NY home embraces a California-style approach to mid-century design — a variation of the timeless architectural style that often describes the homes as lighter, breezier, and more indoor-outdoor driven compared to other houses built in the same style (which often had to factor in different climate conditions).

Much like other California-style mid-century modern homes, 17 Pilgrim Road has a flat roof with extra prominent wide overhangs (for sun shading) and incorporates influences from Japanese architecture (open floorplan, minimalism), setting itself apart from other similar properties on the East Coast, which feel a little more Euro-influenced or traditional in their styling.

The home’s distinct architecture has not gone unnoticed.

The award-winning residence is the recipient of the 2015 Hudson Valley Design Award and has also been featured in House Rules: An Architect’s Guide to Modern Life — written by celebrated architect Deborah Berke, who’s also the Dean of the Yale School of Architecture.

But Berke did more than just write about the home.

Deborah Berke, who’s also the Founding Principal at TenBerke Architects, spearheaded a significant overhaul of the home alongside Noah Biklen, Senior Principal, with help from builder David Prutting.

Originally built in 1969, the steel-beam construction was completely restored in 2014.

Embracing the surrounding nature, both inside and out

To revamp the mid-century home, Berke and Biklen chose materials such as warm mahogany to create a deep contrast with the concrete and stucco features.

Embracing the outdoors, the home is surrounded with glass, allowing living space to melt away and let the landscape rush in. The result is a truly bespoke experience that hints at the masters behind the project.

With interiors spanning nearly 6,500 square feet

With generous living spaces that span 6,473 square feet, the beautifully updated New York home features radiant flooring, a spa-like primary suite, and 16 skylights that flood it with natural light.

The house has 5 bedrooms, 5.5 bathrooms, a gym, sauna, and a full lower level where two of the bedrooms are located.

Minimalist decor throughout, letting nature’s spectacle unfold past oversized windows

The strategically placed windows allow the nature views to act as centerpieces throughout the home.

In true mid-century modern fashion, rooms flow freely into each other, and seem purposefully designed for a laid-back, sun-soaked lifestyle.

The primary bedroom has a frosted window separating it from the bathroom

The primary features a spa-like bath with dual sinks, a standalone tub, and an enclosed shower with a frosted glass wall that also faces the bedroom — adding another notable feature to this design-forward home.

And nature-enveloped outdoor areas

Outside, a stone patio, heated pool, and pergola with a sunshade overlook lush greenery.

Rounding up the home’s many attributes is a 3-car heated garage, 5-zone central air, a gym, sauna, and a full lower level.

Including a pool with generous views

An irregularly shaped pool sits next to the tiered stone patios, with unobstructed nature views. Surrounded by tall trees and lush greenery, the pool area is as private as it is inviting, with the covered pergola adding a chic factor.
